How do I get my website on google? Part 5

Meta Tags

The next thing we will talk about is Meta Tags.  Meta tags can play a key role in SEO .  A meta tag is text that a website owner can embed in the source code of your web page.  Most of this information is not visible on the site, although part of it is visible to the search engines.

Let’s talk about a few of these tags .

The Title Tag actually appears in two places.  One is on the top title bar at the very top of your browser .  Most people won’t even notice it , but the search engines will!  The title tag is also what shows up when someone does a search for your site.  In Google, it’s the blue, underlined text that links to your website.

Below that text is a description.  This description is pulled from the Description Meta Tag.

It’s useful to have your most important keywords as part of your Title and Description.  Resist having your title and description be too long.

Another meta tag is the Keyword Meta Tag.  Here you can include a bunch of keywords, separated by commas. My understanding is that Google no longer pays much, if any, attention to these, but other search engines do and they are easy to include, so why not include them.

Technological Stuff

There is a whole bunch of technological stuff we do to improve SEO.  As this is really a beginner’s session, I won’t go into too much detail.

The type and quality of your code is very important.  Clean code well outperforms messy code.

XML sitemaps are listings of all your pages.  This helps Google figure out what is relevant and what is not, and makes sure Google finds all your pages.

You can have no follow tags. For example, if you have a Privacy Page that doesn’t have anything to do with what you’re offering, you can tell Google not to include it, so that it does not dilute the value of your other pages.

Those are just a few technology items to give you a sense.
